FATTORIA VARRAMISTA
Glad to be part of this area, Terre di Pisa, we will tell you something about us and our history.
We are in Montopoli Val d’Arno municipality, the estate covers a surface of 390ha, 8ha of this are vineyards, 200ha of forest, 70ha of arable land, 70ha of poplar plantation, 10ha of reforestation essences, the rest is divided between gardens, meadows and pastures.
Already ih the XIIIth Century Varramista is in some historical books, where it was called “vera mistra” or Vara Mistra” (Valle Ramista or Valle Frammista) for the surrounding forest variety.
Since 1406 property of the noble Florentine Capponi family.
The construction of the main Villa, that stands at the centre of the property on a soft hill, dates back to 1598. Bartolomeo Ammannati and Bernardo Buontalenti seem to have contributed to the Villa and Italianate Graden project, for the presence of some architectural elements related to them.
The Capponi family owns the estate for a long time, using the Villa as a summer residence.
At the beginning of the 1950s Enrico Piaggio bought it, when he sterted to relaunch the Piaggio in Pontedera with the invention of the Vespa mop.
The end of the 80s is a crucial moment for the revival of the wine production and the developmente of tourism. Giovanni alberto Agnelli, grandson of Enrico Piaggio, with the help of Federico Staderini, who still collaborates with us and is the mind of our wines, decides to plant Syrah grape or we should better say that we regrafted Syrah on a 1972 vineyard of Chianti.
Syrah is added to Sangiovese and Merlot, already present in our vineyards and from that moment is starts a new adventure that leads us to produce today 3 wines: Varramista (3.000 bottles), Frasca (7.000 bottles), Sterpato (15.000-25.000 bottles). The production is between 35.000 and 45.000 bottle per year, depending on the climatic condition.
Between the end oth 90s and the beginning of the 2000s 5ha of vineyard are added. They are in the other family business estate in Capalbio, in the Maremma shire. There we grom Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot, Petiti Verdot, cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Vermentino.
Hand harvest, production selection in the vineyard and the journey of the grape begins, passing through the modern cellar, the historic cellar, also called “vinaia” as reported in the texts of XVth century and ends in the bottle ageing warehouse. It ends just in part! The work is not finished yet, you have to be patient and wait the best moment to bring out the wines to the market.
The organic certification arrived in 2021.
Giovanni Alberto Agnelli loved Syrah and we wanted to give new life to the farms inside the property and during 10 years 3 of them have been renovated. Today we have 12 self catering apartments, 3 swimming pools and various amenities for those who wish to relax in the sun and peace of the Terre di Pisa.
